The Problem

Accor UK & Ireland Management Development Program

Accor UK & Ireland observed that 75% of Hotel Managers were being recruited externally. It was determined that internal candidates required targeted support to transition into General Manager roles and to develop a robust succession pipeline. In collaboration with a consultant, an effective programme was established; however, after 18 years, the facilitator elected to retire, jeopardising the continuity of the programme. Consequently, there was a need to refresh the initiative to ensure it remained aligned with Accor’s evolving objectives and continued to address both market and owner expectations.

The Solution

For Optimal Development, A Program Needs To Provide Knowledge And Challenge

Michael Heyward has accumulated 15 years of experience at Accor, where he developed extensive familiarity with company standards and procedures. In addition, he serves as a Lecturer at Glion Higher Education Institution. Michael’s expertise and background position him well to take on the role of program facilitator, allowing him to offer innovative perspectives and identify enhancements for the program.

A key initiative was the integration of self-awareness practices through Harrison Assessments’ Behavioural Profiling, equipping participants to gain insight into their leadership styles, strengths, and areas for further development. The program delivers targeted training across core disciplines, drawing on insights from senior executives and external experts. Participants engage in simulated leadership challenges designed to foster self-reliance and intrinsic motivation.

The program consists of monthly modules covering:

Leadership
Commercial (Sales, Marketing, Loyalty, Revenue Management)
Talent & Culture
Business Planning
Presentation Skills
